Communication and texture with K. Foster

We looked at a non-visual London. Here's is what we found out.

Sound: white noise of London, voices of Londoners, Transport (cars, planes, helicopters, trains etc), the Thames

Smell: pollution, food specific to an area e.g. Chinatown

Touch: The texture under our feet

Non-aural: visual, vibrations, landmarks, geography, London is a flat and can flood.

Non-verbal: map, road signs, posters, sign language, pictograms, computer software e.g. G.P.S.

Socially: People act differently in the city compared to the parks.

We then looked at why things are named they are. E.g. Marble Arch has a large arch.

We discussed how travelling through London the Boroughs seamlessly change without you even noticing.

We then analysed Koyaanisqatsi which looked at busy city life.

Here's the link to the trailer:

We then looked at Powaqqatsi and saw the contrast of city and no-city life.

Here's the link for the opening:

We looked at London as a person and each of us contributed a word.
It goes as:
  • fascinating
  • irritable
  • artistic
  • unhelpful
  • unreliable
  • beautiful
  • crazy
  • complicated
  • high maintenance
  • Gold Digger
  • Sleazy
  • unpredictable
London in one word.

  • metropolis/capital
  • inspiring
  • expensive
  • home
  • historical
  • life
  • diverse
This workshop showed me that there are many ways that London can be perceived in the eyes of different people.
