Symbols and Diagrams with K. Foster

Whats the first thing you do in the morning before you open your eyes?

You use your senses and memory to distinguish where you are.
You use the sounds, smell and touch to figure out that you are in your bedroom.

This workshop allowed me to develop and map my whereabouts.

We thought that the best way to communicate to an audience where you are is by giving them a 360 degree view.

This could be applied to places like London as it has strong visual identity. e.g. landmarks

Places like stations have distinct features. e.g. Baker Street has images of Sherlock Holmes on it' platforms. Charing Cross has a medieval
sculpture and Tottenham Court Road has mosaics on the platform.

We then did an exercise thinking of ten places from home to college. It could be from anything insignificant to something of importance.

My journey list goes as follows:

  • Home
  • Get Ready
  • Good Morning Family
  • Walk through Church Road
  • Neasden Staition
  • Fight for a seat
  • Tube Activity (read, music or general thinking)
  • Elephant and Castle Station
  • Walk through Elephant and Castle subway
  • London College of Communication
We then illustrated these through image and text. Image only and then text only.

We came up with logos for the following points of interest
  • Place of education
  • Place of worship
  • Museum
  • Police station
  • Hospital zone
  • Rail based transport system
