For example: In the Roman mythology the God of love is Cupid. Cupid is often portrayed nude with a bow and arrow with a quiver of arrows on his back.
People have made characters according to the times they live in e.g. Godzilla was a result of Japan's fear of radiation after U.S.A. dropped bombs.
Characters are also used to represent brands e.g. The Michelin Man
People dress up in culture e.g. Halloween and accordance to wear they are from.
In Indonesia/Bali they hold a special annual event where they make giant sculptures and parade them in the streets.
Here is a link to view the parade:

Anthropomorphism is the attributing of human shape or characteristics to a god, animal, or inanimate thing.
By the end of this workshop we developed a character based on the London borough of Camden. Unfortunately I have no photos of this workshop but i'll say the final developed character was A Roman, tiger-faced, shield and sword wielding warrior!
